The Northfield River Rats traveled to Rosemount on Wednesday, June 28th to take on the Irish and walked away with a 7-6 victory. Northfield combined for 12 hits including two doubles from Austin Koep. Koep’s second double scored two runs in the seventh inning, which proved enough to get the win.

The River Rats opened up the scoring in the second inning. Gabe Heinritz drove in Nolan Thompson on a single that just snuck under the Irish third baseman’s glove.

Third Inning Mayhem

In the third inning, both teams offense’s came alive. The River Rats loaded the bases up after two errors and a bunt single from Tegan Mellgren that he legged out. Seth Thompson roped a hard ground ball to the third baseman that he couldn’t handle and scored Geiger from third. Aaron Resietter followed with a single to center to score Mellgren, Nolan Thompson walked to score Koep, and finally, Rauk singled to center to score Seth Thompson and give Northfield the 5-0 lead.

However, in the bottom half, Rosemount scored four runs of their own. Peroutka singled and Blume reached on a hard ground ball to Nolan Thompson. Ty Hansen then followed up with a hard ground ball that got past Rauk at first that scored both Peroutka and Blume. Cam Richardson kept the line moving after reaching on an error by Nolan Thompson. Ryan Jeffery then hit another hard ground ball at Thompson that he couldn’t handle and scored Hansen. In the following at-bat, Reisetter attempted to throw out Richardson who was trying to steal third base, but the throw went into left field and Richardson ended up scoring to bring the game to, 5-4.

Austin Koep delivered the big two-run double in the seventh inning after Geiger and Mellgren each reached to give out the River Rats up, 7-4.

Gabe Heinritz came in to relieve starting pitcher Grant Hutton in the seventh but gave up a two-run home run to Ryan Jeffery to make it a one-run game. However, Heinritz got out of the inning, and the game, to give the River Rats their fifth win of the season.

Grant Hutton on the mound finished with two strikeouts over six innings of work.
